MICAH MINISTRIES
WE SERVE NEXT ON:
MONDAY, JUNE 5TH
COOKIES ARE NO LONGER NEEDED!
FCC supports Micah Ministries in three main ways:
Cooking and Serving
First Christian Church cooks and serves meals and works in the clothing pantry at Micah Ministries on the first Monday of each month. We have a team of 5-6 people who shop for the food needed for that night's meal and then spend the day preparing the meal for that evening. Later in the afternoon we send down additional volunteers to help with serving the meal. We always have a need for extra volunteers who can help cook, serve or work in the clothing pantry.
If you are unable to join us at Micah, you can still help by signing up to make a homemade dessert to be served with our meal each month. Desserts should be brought to the church and then are delivered to Micah Ministries. We alternate each month between cakes and cookies.
You are welcome to join us! We serve on the first Monday of each month. Contact the church office at 229-8400 for more information.
Hygiene Kits
As part of the clothing pantry at Micah Ministries, hygiene kits are distributed to those in need when they come in for a meal. We collect travel, samle or hotel size of the following items needed to put together a hygiene kit:
toothpaste, toothbrush, bar soap, shampoo, lotion, kleenex/tissues, comb, band aids, wash cloth, hand towel, toilet paper, diapers, refill wet wipes and zip lock bags in quart and gallon sizes
Items may be dropped off at the church office.
Homeless Awareness Month
In January, First Christian Church of Blue Springs and partnering churches will be helping to spread awareness about the homeless in the Kansas City Metro area. We have some exciting things in the works to kick off a drive where we will be collecting items such as: blankets, coats, diapers, hygiene kit items, etc.
About Micah Ministries:
The Micah Ministry began in 2001 at Independence Boulevard Christian Church (in downtown Kansas City) and continues today as an ecumenical outreach to the urban poor in the greater Kansas City metro area. Week after week, Micah is enriched by the servant leadership of numerous partnering churches and community organizations which voluntarily staff, supply and fund the Micah Ministry. This urban mission is unique in several ways: It is the largest local outreach mission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the largest region for the Christian Church (the Kansas City region). Also, it is one of the few urban outreach missions that simultaneously offer multiple ministries in one evening, in one location, over a single hour-and-a-half. As well, we welcome peaceful guests who may or may not be sober to receive those ministries, and there is never a charge for receiving ministry at Micah.
The Micah Ministry provdies a delicious, home-cooked supper each Monday, beginning at 5:30 pm. While this is in progress, Clothing Pantry volunteers go to the tables where guests are eating their meal and take seasonally-appropriate hygiene kit, blanket and/or clothing orders. Children's clothing is only distributed to guests who children are present with them.
Simultaneously, Micah Ministries offers private, individual counseling to those in need and, also, Open Adoption Placement assistance for the children of guests who may need either short-term or permanent placement in a new, stable, Christian home. Children's basketball ("Boulevard Hoops") takes place in the gymnasium at 6:15 pm and our AA group meets at 6:30 pm on the Mezzanine level.
